Talk Story with Taupouri & Kekuhi

We couldn’t pass up an opportunity to talk with Taupouri & Kekuhi backstage at the Kumukahi Festival, Sam’s Town, Las Vegas. After a brief introduction of themselves, the couple share their thoughts as Kumukahi Reactionary Panel members as well as their experiences of showcasing their hula lineage.

Taupouri & Kekuhi enlighted us with their views of Hawaiians living in Las Vegas, California, and throughout the continental United States.

Dr. Taupouri Tangaro is an Associate Professor and the Chairman of the Humanities Department at Hawaii Community College. He is a practitioner of the hula Pele through Halau O Kekuhi, Keaukaha, Hawai’i. Doctor Tangaro received his Doctor of Philosophy from Union Institute & University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Kekuhi Kanae Kanahele Kealiikanakaoleohaililani, Kumu Hula of Halau O Kekuhi. Kekuhi is an Assistant Professor of Hawaii Life Way at Hawaii Community College. She is a co-creator & Vice President of Napou, Inc., a business entity that provides service for Hawaii Cultural Resourcing.

Kumukahi, Sams Town Live!

The Kumukahi Ukulele & Hula Festival is an annual event that brings together acclaimed hula halau and Hawaiian musicians from across the country for a weekend of music & dance honoring the culture & history of Hawai’i.
