Through The Years With Kapena
It was in 1984 when all of Hawai’i took notice at what was unfolding in the neighborhood of Kaimuki. Thanks to KIKI-FM’s statewide high school talent contest Brown Bags To Stardom Hawaii discovered three musically talented gentlemen calling themselves Kapena.
That evening at the Waikiki Shell the audience sent out an obligated lackluster round of applause as the Kaimuku High School representatives walked on stage. You could hear it, all the whispering, “Who’s this Portagee-haole guy with two Samoans”. The music started… Whoa mean! Standing ovation!
Kelly Boy De Lima – lead vocals and ukulele, Tongan brothers Tiva Tatofi on base, Timo Tatofi on guitar.
In 1986 the trio recorded their first album entitled, Satisfaction Guaranteed which was recorded live at Sparky’s Lounge and earned a nomination by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts for the 1987 Na Hoku award Most Promising New Artist.
Their second album entitled Kapena (and More), Kapena received two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards; Best Hawaiian Contemporary Album of the Year and Group of the Year!
Kapena has recorded over 20 CDs featuring countless hit songs, received numerous music awards and captured the hearts of not only Hawaii, but the fans worldwide.
Since then, band members and the music have both evolved. Yet, it still features the distinct sound of Kelly Boy’s ukulele playing and classic vocals.
The New Kapena
Kapena is still releasing island hits as an all-ohana music group. How awesome is it, that Kelly Boy can now entertain audiences accompanied by son, Kapena and daughters Lilo and Kalena! Each of the De Lima’s also have successful solo hits.
…and there you go, Kapena through the years.
