The Honolulu Star Advertiser reported that University of Hawai’i at Manoa Athletics Director Ben Jay will resign in June 2015. Only two years into his position Ben Jay says he’s leaving because of family concerns. His base salary is/was $293,000 per year.
It hasn’t been easy for Ben Jay. On top of the financial struggles, he struggled to learn the Hawaiian culture, Island culture, Local culture. He met resistance from Hawaii kama’aina when he tried to change the school’s nicknames with Warriors for men, Rainbow Wahine for women. Kama’aina prevailed – Rainbow Warriors. Jay was also injured and hospitalized trying to break up a fight during a Rainbow Wahine basketball game.
Hawaii Athletics have been in the red and struggling financially for a long time. Jay told UH Board of Regents that a struggling football program may not survive in the new climate of college athletics. Yet, it was his decision to keep head coach Norm Chow despite having only 8 wins in three seasons.
He also stated that if he knew how things were when he took over as the UH AD he may have not accepted the job. Did Ben Jay believe just because he once held a position at Ohio State University he was going to find a pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow(s)? Did he realized there was no Buckeye Silver Platter and that it would require some actual work to get things accomplished in Manoa? Ben Jay is leaving UH Manoa hanging… “braddah wen’ pukas!”
